River Monsters...... Empty very Few.......

Pollution of PCB and heavy metals are a concern. The upper Tennessee is so polluted they reccomend no eating and Commerical fishing is banned! Sometimes if we don't think it will live from gut hook or somrthing we give it away or eat them. The Flatheads are the best, IMO for taste.

River Monsters...... Empty We get some pretty big channel cats up here....

Post  CTChris Sun Aug 05, 2012 2:52 pm

...not big like those flat-heads though. Pretty good eating especially if caught in clear water. The best though IMO is perch caught in cold clear water. Puts trout to shame.

River Monsters...... Empty We get them in the Connecticut river...

Post  CTChris Sun Aug 05, 2012 3:02 pm

Some call them "rock bass". I remember what the Connecticut river was like when I was a kid, and wont eat anything out of there. It's much cleaner now, and many do eat what they catch there. If I ever get a Crappie someplace other than the Connecticut, I'll give it a try. I'll guess they taste like Bluegills or Pumpkinseeds?

TVA dropped the Lakes down 20ft or so for Spring runoff, we made brush beds and would slay them in the Spring after the water rose.
My Mom and Dad where Sauger Fishermam, light taste and flaky meat on them too!

River Monsters...... Empty I know the sauger is related to the walleye..

Post  CTChris Sun Aug 05, 2012 6:00 pm

...and I know the walleye tastes like perch, so the sauger must be deeeelicious!

Thinking about saltwater, the striped bass is damned good, the blackfish even better. Blues are too fishy for me. We get lots of flats and they are all good eating.

They never come this far north, but as far as I'm concerned, the best eating fish is grouper hands down.

River Monsters...... Empty Trying for Sheepshead in Sept....

Post  Doug S Sun Aug 05, 2012 6:26 pm

Never fished them, they say they have a very light hook bite, the Sauger is the same way. They fish for them with a certain sand crab, they have one large claw and are called "One Armed Bandits, LOL.

River Monsters...... Empty Fiddler crab...

Post  CTChris Sun Aug 05, 2012 6:49 pm

River Monsters...... L%2039E.Fiddler

Good bait for blackfish and stripers...any small crab will do though. The fiddlers live on the mudflats in salt marshes....they wave the big claw around to attract the females I think. They are alert as hell and hard to catch.

What you call Sheepsheads.....we call Porgies...and they are fun as hell to catch and tasty. Good fishing Doug!

This old Hillbilly ain't much on Salt Fishing. I make friends and they show me the ropes, LOL. Of course the Net makes it much easier, i'm on a Catfish Forum with a very good bunch of folk and learned a lot.

River Monsters...... Empty I grew up on the river and only half an hour from the shore.

Post  CTChris Sun Aug 05, 2012 7:46 pm

I love fishing of all kinds, but around here if you want the big stuff, salt water is the way to go. I have a buddy that is a die-hard trout fisherman. Fun fishing, but what he catches is often smaller than thet bait we use for stripers. You might be surprised at what we have swimming around Long island sound. Montauk point is only just across the water....

River Monsters...... Empty Tennessee River....

Post  Doug S Sun Aug 05, 2012 8:06 pm

I grew up a mile from Ft Loudon Dam Hybred Stripe are a big buisnees for tourist now. We caught stripe by the dozens in the sixities and early seventies, now very few are caught. They started stocking the Hybreds in the late sixties. It's about the same rig and bait for the Hybred Stripe and Big cats, i use a 8/0 or 9/0 hook and live brim and shad and little smaller for the stripers. The big Blues and channels will hit about any type cut bait.
I'm a fishing fool, Donna's a Fishin' Widow and great about it. I told a friend who's wife is tight on him the secret is aggrivate the hell out of her and stick it in her every time she bends over and she will love for you to go fishin!
Watch this Video my biggest Blue cat at 46 pound came out of the turbin hole on the film clip same place he caught the Hybred, i was 14 years old!

River Monsters...... Empty Look at those minnows!

Post  CTChris Sun Aug 05, 2012 8:36 pm

My best was a skinny 38 pounder...you could easily fit your head in it's mouth. I caught it surf casting with chunk bunker just across from Montauk on our side. I thought it was a sand shark at first....not much of a hit but heavy pull. We get lots of schoolie sized ones in the river. A friend in South Carolina gets some biggies in the Santee. Land locked. Up here they chase the shad up the river in May. I think the state record was caught in the river up in Enfield....probably 50 miles from salt-water.

Here is one of our big boys:
