Ah, but Comrade.  It's for the proletariat.  The rules, you know.

The gift of socialism is one where the leadership, the ruling class, create a society wherein they themselves are the only ones to reap the benefits of cultural sacrifice; properly read, from the many to the few.  The use of land, once the property of an individual becomes untouchable to the individual.  The use of healthcare, once under ownership of those who negotiated its costs for the services of other independent individuals.  

Entire societies enter into agreements with their governments regarding what seemed such a noble task.  A small price in tax to aid the less fortunate.  Then more tax to remove the discomfort of failed self reliance to the "lower classes".  See?  It's always about some other them.  Coddle them, coddle us in allowing the governmental class to redistribute our wealth with our blessings.  And of course, take some for themselves as reward for initiating their noble goals.  It's just easier to let someone else do it, don'tcha think?

The middle class.  The most powerful entity in society.  We buy from the rich.  The poor cannot.  We pay to support the poor.  The rich could not be charitable to anyone without us buying their wares first.  If there is a collective, a socialism operating in reality then it is the middle class' self determination to live in general harmony despite the fools in the governmental class trying to hide the vividly clear observation of what works in a society and the thieves who live among us in every neighborhood despite economic bracket or claims to believe in higher powers.    Religion is just a polite way to say corruptible.  After all, what do many governments attempt to become but messiahs to the ills of those they deem their wards?

Our founders had no such aspirations.
