This is the type of article which indirectly begs the question; who dictates the subject matter we discuss?  Us, the media or those in office?  The reason is, actions are always rooted in what's been said, first.  Fights break out on things said.  Partnerships are based upon words carefully, artfully describing potential future actions, first.  The value of things being thought, then spoken, determine the direction of actions. Of lives.  Actions are conscripted to what was previously spoken or proclaimed.  Indentured. We are held accountable in our actions by how closely they match what we said we would do.

In this case, the article references a misquote of a great mind.  I think someone gave him the quote and he either chose not to speak it fully or forgot some of it.  Either way, his actions don't match the actions of Washington's to whom he referred.

There may have been a time when the principled led the discussions.  Although it seems they were also the ones who gained office too.  They set the tone because they thought outside themselves.  Whereas today, lobbyists set the tone by appearing to think outside themselves, but always ultimately for their own interests first and foremost.   So we are led, willingly or otherwise, by the strength of words backed by actions.

Young men fight wars for old men.  Middle aged men raise the next generation.  Older men move corporations or direct culture and societies.  They have been released from familial responsibilities and should use their knowledge and experience to participate in the guidance and solidification of societies.   They are the ones who've built tangible assets.  Foundations upon which others can stand and continue to build, adhering to the principles of those who committed their "second wind" years toward societal structural integrity.

Lobbyists aren't necessarily the bad people.  The evil or reviled people.  They are the ones who understand how to gain influence.  They are the ones who understand, as another person in the comments section quoted in that article, that you can't have crops without breaking the soil.  Or the ocean without the power of the waves. Or rain without thunder and lightening.

A lobbyist is someone who backs his or her view and intent with actions.  And that's how we get to where we are.  Because the "other side" is working harder and more consistently than we are.  Not our side, we.  Us.  They're working harder than our rank and file. And everyday democrats remember the mantra, "they're working for us, the little people" because rank and file dems simply trust their leadership.

Unfortunately, we can't trust ours.

But every election, we get a few more constitutionally minded folks into office.  The Olde Guard establishment hates it, but we're catching them.  Even though they try desperately to beat down our resolve, our ranks are steadily growing.  Even though they whip up problems to misdirect us, create chaos where none should be, we continue to gain strength.  Sometimes, at the right time it takes a lot of concerted energy.  But for the most part, putting in a little time finding out what our local governments are up to and why and then becoming involved goes a very long way.  A little effort and mindful interactive dipolomacy is the key.
