Former Illinois Sen. Martin Sandoval pleads guilty to accepting $250,000 in bribes

CHICAGO — Former Illinois Sen. Martin Sandoval pled guilty to accepting $250,000 in bribes to block red light camera legislation, and filing a false tax return.

Sandoval pled guilty in federal court in downtown Chicago Tuesday, just one day after he was charged.
He arranged to be paid $5k a month at one point. Said “hard for me to swallow how people make so much money off of you (the company who paid him) but I gotta do all the work.”

He faces 10 to 13 years in prison, but could get less as he is cooperating with the feds.

“He’s agreed to testify on any matter we ask him to testify about,” said U.S. Attorney John Lausch.

Sandoval will be released on a $10,000 unsecured bond, which means he doesn’t pay anything unless he breaks his bond conditions. A status hearing is scheduled for July 29, which is when sentencing will be discussed.
Agents raided Sandoval’s office in Springfield, his office in Chicago and his home on Sept. 24 amid still-active federal investigations of public corruption that have ensnared multiple Democrats.
Sandoval resigned in November.
